You've just finished your +2, or maybe you're a fresh graduate staring at a blank CV, wondering how everyone else already seems to have "experience." Sound familiar? You're not alone. Every year, thousands of students in Nepal ask the same question: should I look for a part time job, or should I try freelancing instead?

The honest answer — you can do both, and in 2026's job market, doing both might actually be the smarter move. This guide walks you through everything: where to find real part time jobs in Kathmandu, how freelancing works for complete beginners, and which path fits your schedule, skills, and goals.

Why Fresh Grads in Nepal Are Turning to Part-Time Work

Nepal's job market hasn't been kind to fresh graduates. Full-time openings are competitive, often demand "2+ years experience" for entry-level roles, and salaries rarely match the cost of living in cities like Kathmandu.

That's exactly why part time jobs have become the go-to bridge between college and career. They let you:

Earn while you study or job-hunt
Build real, resume-worthy experience
Test different industries before committing
Develop soft skills like communication and time management

And increasingly, students are pairing this with freelancing — remote, flexible work that doesn't care where you live, only what you can deliver.

Part Time Jobs in Nepal: Where to Actually Look

If you've searched "part time jobs near me" and gotten overwhelmed by outdated listings, here's a more focused approach.

Best Places to Find Part Time Jobs in Kathmandu

Kathmandu remains the hub for most part-time opportunities in Nepal, simply because of the sheer number of businesses, cafes, call centers, and startups based there.

Where to Look	Best For	Typical Pay Range
Merojob, JobsNepal	Office/admin roles	Rs. 8,000–15,000/month
Facebook job groups	Cafes, retail, tutoring	Rs. 5,000–12,000/month
University notice boards	Campus jobs, research assistant work	Varies
Direct walk-ins (cafes, shops)	Retail, hospitality	Rs. 6,000–10,000/month
LinkedIn	Internships, part-time roles at startups	Varies

Popular Part Time Jobs in Kathmandu for Students

If you're a +2 or bachelor's student, these roles are realistic starting points:

Cafe or restaurant staff — flexible shifts, tips included
Call center/BPO agent — decent pay, evening shifts common
Private tutor — teach subjects you're strong in
Data entry operator — good for typing-savvy students
Retail sales assistant — mall and showroom jobs in areas like New Road, Durbar Marg
Content writer or social media assistant — for local businesses building an online presence

A tip that actually works: walk into 5–6 shops or cafes near your college with a simple one-page CV. Half of Kathmandu's part-time hiring still happens this way — not through job portals.

Searching "Part Time Jobs Near Me"? Do This Instead

Location-based searches often return outdated or spammy results. Instead:

Join 3–4 local Facebook groups for your city (e.g., "Kathmandu Jobs," "Part Time Jobs Nepal")
Set Google Jobs alerts with your city name
Ask seniors or alumni — most part-time openings are filled through referrals before they're ever posted online

Freelancing: The Other Half of the Equation

While part time jobs give you structure, freelancing gives you flexibility — and often, better pay per hour once you build a portfolio.

What Is Freelancing, Really?

Freelancing simply means selling a skill directly to clients — often international ones — without being tied to one employer. You could be writing blog posts for a US client one week and designing a logo for a Kathmandu startup the next.

For Nepali students, freelancing has become genuinely attractive because it pays in dollars, works around class schedules, and doesn't require a formal degree — just proof you can deliver.

How to Do Freelancing as a Complete Beginner

Here's a realistic starting roadmap, not the "get rich in a week" version:

Pick one skill and go deep — writing, graphic design, video editing, data entry, or virtual assistance are the easiest entry points for students.
Build a small portfolio first — even 3 sample projects done for free or for a local business count.
Create profiles on freelancing platforms — this is where most beginners get stuck, so let's break it down.
Apply smart, not everywhere — tailor each proposal instead of copy-pasting the same message.
Deliver early, communicate often — your first 5 clients matter more than your first 5 payments.

Best Freelancing Sites for Students

Choosing the right freelancing site for students matters more than people think — some platforms are beginner-friendly, others are brutally competitive.

Platform	Best For	Beginner-Friendly?
Upwork	Long-term clients, higher-paying gigs	Moderate — takes patience
Fiverr	Selling defined "gig" services	Yes — easiest to start
Freelancer.com	Wide variety of small projects	Yes
PeoplePerHour	UK/EU-based clients	Moderate
Toptal	High-skill, high-pay freelancers	No — for experienced pros

Upwork vs Fiverr: Which Should You Start With?

This is probably the most common question we get from students, so let's settle it clearly.

Upwork works on a proposal-based system — clients post jobs, and you bid with a tailored pitch. It's better once you have some portfolio pieces, because competition is high and clients expect confidence.

Fiverr flips the model — you create "gigs" (fixed service packages) and clients come to you. This is often easier for absolute beginners because you're not competing head-to-head in real time.

Our recommendation for students: Start on Fiverr to get your first few reviews and build confidence, then move to Upwork once you have a portfolio and testimonials to strengthen your proposals.

Part Time Job vs Freelancing: Which One Fits You?

Neither option is objectively "better" — it depends on your personality, schedule, and financial needs.

Choose a part time job if you want fixed income, in-person experience, and a structured routine.
Choose freelancing if you're self-motivated, comfortable with irregular income at first, and want to build skills that scale internationally.
Choose both if you can manage your time — many successful young professionals in Nepal started exactly this way, working evenings at a shop while freelancing on weekends.

Practical Tips Before You Start

Keep a simple spreadsheet of applications sent — for both part time jobs and freelance proposals
Never pay to "register" on legitimate freelancing platforms — that's a red flag
Use your college email cautiously; a professional Gmail address looks more credible to clients
Set a minimum rate for freelance work early, even if it's small — undervaluing yourself is a common beginner mistake
Treat your first part-time job like a reference-building exercise, not just a paycheck

Conclusion

Whether you go with a part time job, dive into freelancing, or try a mix of both, the goal at this stage isn't to find your "dream job" — it's to build experience, confidence, and a track record you can build on. Nepal's part time job market, combined with global freelancing platforms like Upwork and Fiverr, gives fresh graduates more options today than any generation before. Start small, stay consistent, and treat every gig — big or small — as a stepping stone.
