So you got into a US university—congratulations, that’s the hard part done. Now comes the part that scares most students: the visa. Here’s some good news. You really can self-apply for a US student visa without paying an agent thousands of rupees or dollars to do it for you. The process is bureaucratic, yes, but it’s not complicated once someone walks you through it in plain language.

This guide does exactly that. By the end, you’ll know exactly how to self-apply for America as an international student, step by step, with real numbers, real timelines, and the 2026 policy changes that are actually affecting students right now.

What Does It Mean to Self-Apply for a US Student Visa?

When people say they want to self-apply for a US student visa, they mean handling the entire F-1 visa process on their own—no consultancy, no “visa agent,” no middleman charging a service fee to fill out forms you could fill out yourself.

And honestly? Most of the F-1 process is designed to be done by the applicant directly. The US government doesn’t require an agent. You deal with your school, the SEVIS system, the DS-160 form, and the embassy—all of which have official, student-facing portals in plain English.

If you’re 18 to 25, tech-comfortable, and willing to follow instructions carefully, you are exactly the kind of applicant who can confidently self-apply for a US student visa.

Student Visa USA Requirements: What You Need Before You Start

Before you touch a single form, make sure you meet the core student visa USA requirements:

Unconditional admission to a SEVP-approved school (SEVP = Student and Exchange Visitor Program)
A signed Form I-20 issued by that school
Proof you can financially support your tuition and living costs
Strong, demonstrable ties to your home country (family, property, job prospects, plans)
A valid passport
Academic records and standardized test scores (IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, GRE, GMAT—whichever your program needs)

Meeting these student visa USA requirements on paper is step one. Proving them convincingly at your interview is step two—and that’s where most self-applicants actually stumble, not in the paperwork itself.

5-Year Student Visa USA Requirements (Visa Validity Explained)

A lot of students search for “5-year student visa USA requirements," expecting a special visa category—there isn’t one. What’s actually happening is this: F-1 visas issued to applicants from many countries (Nepal included) are commonly stamped with up to five years of validity or tied to program length, whichever is shorter.

That validity period is not the same as how long you can stay in the US. Your actual permitted stay is tied to your Form I-20 and program end date, officially referred to as “Duration of Status” (D/S)—though this is exactly the part of the system being reformed in 2026 (more on that below). The 5-year visa stamp simply means you can use that visa to re-enter the US multiple times during that window, as long as your student status remains valid.

How to Self-Apply for a US Student Visa: Step-by-Step Process

Here’s the full roadmap. This is precisely how you self-apply for a US student visa from start to finish—no agency required.

Step 1: Get Admitted and Receive Your Form I-20

Apply directly to SEVP-certified schools (check status on the official SEVP school search). Once admitted, your school issues your Form I-20—Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status. Check every detail: your name spelling, program dates, and funding figures. Then sign and date it. This document is the backbone of your entire application.

Step 2: Pay the SEVIS I-901 Fee

Go to the official SEVIS I-901 fee website and pay $350 (the current fee for F-1 students). Print your receipt—you'll need it at your interview. This is a non-negotiable, separate payment from your visa fee.

Step 3: Fill Out the DS-160 Online Form

This is the core of how you self-apply for America as a student. The DS-160 is on the US Department of State’s official portal. You’ll:

Select your interview location (e.g., the US Embassy nearest you)
Enter personal, family, and travel history details
Add your school and program information
Upload a compliant 2x2 inch photo (white background, no glasses)
Submit and print the confirmation page with the barcode

Take your time on this form. Small inconsistencies here are one of the most common reasons applications get flagged for extra review.

Step 4: Pay the MRV Fee and Book Your US Student Visa Appointment

Create an account on your country’s official visa scheduling portal (often through USTravelDocs or your regional embassy site). Pay the visa application fee (MRV fee)—currently $185—then book both your biometrics appointment and your consular interview. This is the official US student visa appointment process, and it’s the same system every applicant uses, agency or not.

A quick but important tip: US student visa appointment slots fill fast during peak admission seasons (May–August). Book the moment your DS-160 and SEVIS fee are confirmed—don't wait.

Step 5: Organize Your Interview Documents

Build a folder with:

Document	Why It Matters
Valid passport (6+ months beyond travel date)	Required for entry and visa stamping
Signed Form I-20	Proof of SEVP admission
DS-160 confirmation page	Proof of application submission
SEVIS I-901 receipt	Proof of fee payment
MRV fee receipt	Proof of visa fee payment
Academic transcripts, IELTS/TOEFL/SAT scores	Proof of academic eligibility
Bank statements, sponsor letters, tax records	Proof of financial capacity
Ties to home country evidence	Proof of intent to return

Step 6: Attend the Interview

Arrive early. Be ready to clearly explain why you chose your course, why that specific university, how you’re funding it, and what your plans are after graduation. Confidence and honesty matter more than rehearsed answers—consular officers interview thousands of students and can tell the difference.

If approved, your visa sticker goes into your passport, and you can enter the US up to 30 days before your program start date.

How to Apply for F1 Visa: Quick Document Checklist

If you’re specifically wondering how to apply for F1 visa paperwork in order, follow this sequence: I-20 → SEVIS fee → DS-160 → MRV fee + appointment → documents → interview. Skipping or reordering these steps is the #1 reason self-applicants get confused halfway through.

Student Visa USA Cost: Full Fee Breakdown

One reason students want to self-apply for a US student visa is simple: it saves money. Here’s the real student visa USA cost, with no agency markup:

Fee	Amount (USD)
SEVIS I-901 Fee	$350
MRV Visa Application Fee	$185
Visa issuance fee (reciprocity, if applicable)	Varies by country
Total baseline cost	~$535

Compare that to agencies that often charge 100–500+ on top of government fees just to fill out forms you can complete yourself in an evening.

US Student Visa Processing Time: What to Expect

US student visa processing time varies by embassy and season, but here’s a realistic breakdown:

DS-160 processing: Instant submission, but review time depends on your interview date
Appointment wait time: 2–8 weeks depending on embassy demand
Interview to decision: Often same-day, though some cases enter “administrative processing” (221(g)), adding weeks
Visa stamping and passport return: 3–7 business days after approval

Apply as early as your I-20 allows—ideally 3 months before your program start date—to buffer against US student visa processing time delays.

Student Visa USA Trump: Policy Changes You Should Know in 2026

If you’re researching student visa USA Trump updates, here’s what’s actually changed. In July 2026, the Department of Homeland Security finalized a rule ending the long-standing “Duration of Status” (D/S) system for F, J, and I visa holders. Instead of staying enrolled indefinitely while in valid student status, the new regulation establishes a fixed period of admission for nonimmigrant visa holders in F, J, and I classifications, requiring students who need more time to formally apply for an Extension of Stay through USCIS.

The rule was originally scheduled to take effect September 15, 2026, applying even to students already in the US, though a federal court postponed that effective date on September 14, 2026. Practically, this means: grape law

Incoming students should expect a fixed four-year admission period tied to their visa rather than open-ended status
Extensions beyond that window will require a federal application, not just continued enrollment
There’s increased scrutiny and vetting tied to this student visa USA Trump policy shift, including reports that the administration had revoked around 8,000 student visas since the start of this term

Because this area is actively being litigated and revised, always check travel.state.gov and your school’s international student office for the latest status before your interview. Policy around this changes fast, and your embassy will have the most current guidance.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When You Self-Apply for a US Student Visa

Inconsistent information between your I-20, DS-160, and interview answers
Weak financial documentation—vague sponsor letters instead of clear bank statements
Rushing the DS-160 and making typos in names or dates
Booking the appointment too late after fee payment
Underpreparing for “intent to return” questions—this is the most scrutinized part of any F-1 interview

Avoiding these five mistakes alone puts you ahead of a huge share of applicants, agency-assisted or not.

Conclusion: Is Self-Applying Worth It?

If you’re organized, detail-oriented, and willing to read instructions carefully, you absolutely can self-apply for a US student visa and save hundreds of dollars in the process. The system—I-20, SEVIS fee, DS-160, MRV fee, appointment, interview—is built to be navigated directly by students, not exclusively through agents. Start early, double-check every form, and treat your interview preparation seriously, and there’s no reason you can’t confidently self-apply for America just like thousands of students do every year.
