If you're finishing +2 and eyeing a bachelor's degree without draining your family's savings, a TU scholarship is one of the most realistic paths to a free or heavily discounted education in Nepal. Tribhuvan University—the country's oldest and largest university—reserves a fixed share of seats in almost every bachelor's program for scholarship holders, and a good chunk of those seats go purely on merit.

The catch? Most students miss out not because they weren't good enough, but because they didn't know the process, missed the notice, or filled the form incorrectly. This guide walks you through exactly how the TU scholarship system works, who qualifies, and how to actually apply — so you don't leave a free seat on the table.

What Is a TU Scholarship, Exactly?

A Tribhuvan University scholarship is a tuition waiver (partial or full) awarded to students admitted into TU-affiliated or constituent colleges. It's built into the university's admission structure, not a separate charity fund you apply to from outside.

Every TU-affiliated college is legally required to set aside a percentage of its seats for scholarship students in each intake. This isn't optional for colleges — it's part of the Tribhuvan University Organization and Educational Administration Regulations.

Broadly, there are two categories:

Merit scholarship — awarded based on your entrance exam rank or previous semester's academic performance
Reserved/inclusive scholarship — awarded to students from specific government-recognized groups (Dalit, Janajati, Madhesi, Muslim, persons with disabilities, women from remote areas, martyrs' families, and similar categories)

Roughly 20% of total regular seats across most TU programs are reserved under the inclusive quota, and within that, a meaningful share — around 30% in many faculties — is set aside purely for merit-based students, open to anyone regardless of background.

Types of TU Scholarships You Can Apply For

Scholarship Type	Basis of Selection	Who It's For
Merit Scholarship	Entrance exam score / semester GPA	Top-ranking students, open to all
Reserved Scholarship	Government-recognized inclusion category	Dalit, Janajati, Madhesi, disabled, remote-area students
Full Free Studentship	Combined merit + economic need	Meritorious students from low-income families
Gold Medal / Rank Scholarship	Highest marks in a specific program	Top 1–2 students (one male, one female) per program

Some technical faculties, like the Institute of Engineering, go even further — splitting scholarships into tiers such as 15% full-tuition waivers, 10% completely free seats, and 25% partial-fee scholarships, all determined by entrance or semester rank.

Who Is Eligible for a TU Merit Scholarship?

You don't need connections or a special application outside the normal admission process. Eligibility generally comes down to:

Academic performance — either your SEE/+2 marks and CMAT/entrance test score (for first semester) or your previous semester's result (for continuing students)
Admission through a TU-affiliated or constituent college
No scholarship stacking — students already benefiting from one scholarship or fee waiver typically can't claim a second one simultaneously
Clean academic record — students who fail a semester exam generally lose eligibility for that scholarship cycle
Category-specific documents, if applying under the reserved quota (recommendation letters, caste/ethnicity certificates, income certificates, or disability documentation, depending on the group)

Priority is often given to students who studied in public/community schools, so don't assume a scholarship is out of reach just because you didn't attend a private +2 college.

How to Apply: Step-by-Step

Here's the part students get wrong most often — a TU scholarship isn't something you apply for separately after admission. It's tied directly to your enrollment.

Get admitted first. You must be formally admitted into a bachelor's program at a TU-affiliated college. Your entrance exam or CMAT rank becomes the basis for first-semester merit scholarships.
Watch for the official notice. After each intake, TU (or the respective faculty/institute) publishes a scholarship notice listing eligible students by rank, program, and college. This is usually published on the TU notices page and in Gorkhapatra, the national gazette.
Collect the TU scholarship form from your college's exam or scholarship section — most colleges distribute this directly rather than requiring you to source it independently.
Fill and submit the form along with your admission documents, mark sheets, and (if applicable) category certificates, within the deadline mentioned in the notice.
Check the merit list. Your college compiles a rank list and forwards it to the Dean's office; if there's a discrepancy in your name, rank, or score, you can usually flag it by email within a short correction window.
Continue performing. From your second semester onward, the scholarship isn't automatic — it renews based on how you score in each subsequent exam.

Tracking Notices: 2080, 2082, and 2083 Updates

Because TU runs on the Bikram Sambat calendar, scholarship notices are labeled by year — and this confuses a lot of applicants scanning for the right one.

The TU scholarship notice 2080 for bachelor covered intakes from that academic session, including programs like BIT and various IOST courses.
The TU scholarship notice 2082 for bachelor pdf download batch corresponds to the more recent 2082/83 academic session, published faculty-wise (Management, Humanities, Science and Technology, and others) with separate quotas per institute.
TU scholarship 2082 and TU scholarship 2083 notices are typically rolled out faculty by faculty rather than as one university-wide announcement, so check your specific faculty's page rather than assuming a single master list exists.

Because notice numbering and PDF links change every session, your safest move is always to check the TU scholarship portal directly at tu.edu.np/notices rather than relying on old shared links, which expire or get replaced.

Full Scholarship for Nepalese Students in Nepal — What "Full" Really Means

When people search for a full scholarship for Nepalese students in Nepal, they usually mean a 100% tuition waiver. Within TU's system, this exists as:

The top-rank scholarship — the single highest-scoring student (often split by gender) in a program can receive a full-fee waiver plus a stipend, in some faculties around NPR 9,000 per semester
The 10% fully free quota in select technical programs, covering the entire regular TU tuition amount
Certain reserved-category full waivers, aimed at students from extremely low-income or marginalized backgrounds

These are competitive by nature — you're typically ranked against every other applicant in your program, not just your college, so a strong SEE and +2 GPA genuinely matters.

Documents You'll Typically Need

Keep these ready before the notice drops, so you're not scrambling at the deadline:

Admission and entrance exam result slip
+2/SEE mark sheets and certificates
Citizenship or birth certificate
Passport-size photos
Category certificate (if applying under reserved quota)
Income verification (for need-based components)
Bank account details (for stipend disbursement, where applicable)

Practical Tips to Improve Your Chances

Don't wait for a separate "scholarship exam." For most TU merit scholarships, your regular entrance/CMAT score is the scholarship criterion.
Choose your college carefully. Constituent campuses and well-established affiliated colleges tend to have clearer, faster scholarship processing than smaller institutions.
Apply through community-school channels if eligible — several colleges give explicit priority or additional fee waivers to public-school graduates.
Keep every semester result strong. Merit scholarships beyond the first semester are re-evaluated, so one weak semester can cost you the waiver.
Bookmark tu.edu.np/notices and check it every semester start — don't rely solely on social media reposts, which are often outdated by the time they're shared.

Conclusion

Getting a TU scholarship isn't about knowing a secret shortcut — it's about entering the admission process with strong marks, understanding which quota you qualify under, and staying alert when your faculty publishes its notice. Whether you're chasing the merit list, a reserved-category waiver, or a full scholarship for Nepalese students in Nepal, the fundamentals stay the same: get admitted, watch the TU scholarship portal, submit your form on time, and keep your grades up every semester after that.

7. FAQ Section

Q1. What is the minimum score needed to get a TU merit scholarship?
There's no fixed universal cutoff — it depends on your program and the number of scholarship seats available that year. Rankings are competitive, so the actual qualifying score shifts each session based on applicant pool and entrance exam difficulty.

Q2. Where can I download the TU scholarship notice for bachelor programs?
Official notices, including PDFs for specific sessions like 2080 or 2082, are published on the TU notices page (tu.edu.np/notices) and often on your respective faculty's or institute's own website.

Q3. Do I need to submit a separate TU scholarship form, or is it automatic?
For first-semester merit scholarships, ranking is usually automatic based on entrance scores, but you still need to collect and submit the TU scholarship form from your college to confirm and process the award.

Q4. Can private college students get a TU scholarship, or is it only for constituent campuses?
Both. TU-affiliated private colleges are also required to reserve scholarship seats, though availability and processing speed can vary by institution.

Q5. Is the TU scholarship renewed automatically every semester?
No. Continuation depends on maintaining strong academic performance in each semester's exams. Failing a semester typically disqualifies you from that scholarship cycle.

Q6. What's the difference between a merit scholarship and a reserved scholarship at TU?
Merit scholarships are awarded purely on academic rank and are open to everyone. Reserved scholarships are set aside for specific government-recognized categories, such as Dalit, Janajati, Madhesi, and differently-abled students.

Q7. How do I check my TU scholarship application status?
Your college's exam or scholarship section maintains the merit list forwarded to the Dean's office. You can confirm your status there, and corrections for rank or name errors are usually accepted within a short window after the list is published.
